What is mantra singing & chanting?…
A mantra is a word, sound or phrase that is repeated during personal or group meditation or prayer, and may also be used at the beginning or end of a yoga class. Ancient mantras of Hinduism and Buddhism are written in Sanskrit, and are the most traditionally recited in the practise of yoga.
Mantras can also be written in other languages such as English and Spanish and may be derived from religion or indigenous traditions. They can also be simple sounds or phrases that resonate with you. You can even write your own mantra, so long as it comes from a place of truthful intention and an open heart.
Bhakti yoga is a spiritual path of loving devotion to a Personal Divine (those who are devoted because of their knowledge or feeling of love). A key practise in Bhakti yoga is Kirtan – the chanting and singing of mantras in a group community environment with musicians and singers leading the gathering. Mantra circles are also forms of Kirtan, however they are not limited to only Bhakti or Kirtan (Sanskrit) mantras.
